Pregnancy is one of the marvels in the scientific world till this day. The process that leads up to pregnancy has been extensively researched on.
For a woman to become pregnant in the traditional way, ovary release an egg and
fertilized by a man’s sperm. The fused cells are called zygote which would further develop into embryo. The embryo will attach to the endometrium(inner wall of the uterus) and at this point, pregnancy is said to start.
Hormonal contraceptives
contain a small amount of man made estrogen and progestin which are
present in the body in maintaining normal cycle of menstruation. The levels of the hormones fluctuate at different periods within a woman's menstrual cycle, and the body responds by menstruating, ovulating, preparing the uterus for pregnancy, and shedding again if no pregnancy occurs. The level of estrogen and progesteron governs these reactions.
Taking these hormones as contraceptives in the pills can prevent pregnancy through a few factors.
In normal menstrual cycle, the level of estrogen and progesteron in the body will be low as the other two hormones known as Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinizing Hormone will rise and lead to the release of egg from ovary(ovulation) . When taking oral contraceptive, the increased level of estrogen and progestin(which acts like progesterone) will
stop the body from ovulating. Progestin can also increase the discharge of
cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm enter the uterus and later find an egg in the fallopian tube. Progestin also can reduce the thickening of the uterus lining, making it undesirable to undergo implantation.
